Author: Emma DoddsPublished 18th Jan 2024

British singer Anne-Marie has been friends with the legendary Ed Sheeran for years and years! The pair first met in around 2010 at the beginning of their careers, have gone on to tour together and even written songs together!

But how did they meet in the first place? Are they still friends? And did they ever date? 👀 We've taken a look back at Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie's friendship over the years...

When did Anne-Marie and Ed Sheeran meet?

The pair met in Paris in 2010! Anne Marie told Northsound 1: "The first time I met Ed and properly hung out was in Paris in this hotel and we had a fat burger together, went to see his show and that was it. We stayed friends ever since that moment.”

When have Anne-Marie and Ed Sheeran toured together?

We caught up with Anne-Marie a few years ago, who told us what it's like going on tour with Ed Sheeran. The singer joined Ed on his '÷' tour in Europe in 2017/2018 and said it was great to hang out with him, describing him as a "cool person".

When asked if they got up to anything wild or stupid after their shows, Anne-Marie admitted she was keen to "be good" and look after her voice. However, she admitted that she spent her birthday in Paris and Barcelona saying: "It was really amazing to celebrate my birthday on tour, every night was just incredible."

While she had an amazing time touring with Ed, she said that it was his fault that her single 'Ciao Adios' didn't get higher in the charts. When 'Ciao Adios' was released Ed also released his whole album, pushing her song down to Number 9, when it could have reached Number 3!

Which songs did Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie write together?

Although they may have written many more together which we're yet to hear, their biggest collaboration so far has been on Anne-Marie's track '2002'.

They wrote the catchy song together with Benny Blanco, Julia Michaels and Steve Mac, and it was released in April 2018. Apparently, Anne-Marie wasn't planning on releasing the song, but Ed saw the potential and convinced her to put it out.

Did Ed Sheeran ever date Anne-Marie?

Nothing has ever been rumoured or confirmed to have happened between the pair, so it looks as though they're just good friends! Ed Sheeran is now married to his childhood sweeheart, Cherry Seaborn, with the couple sharing daughters Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter Seaborn Sheeran.

Are Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie still friends?

They sure are! Ed tends to keep a low profile on social media - although he revealed in February 2023 that he intended to start posting more, so perhaps we'll hear more from him in the future.

Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie on Gogglebox

Anne-Marie joined the cast of Celebrity Gogglebox for the third series which began airing in June 2021, sharing a sofa with her The Voice colleague Sir Tom Jones. However, for the episode airing on Friday 9th July 2021, Anne-Marie was joined by her pal Ed!

This wasn't the first time Ed had appeared on the show, taking part in the show back in 2017 alongside Example and Big Narstie, saying at the time: "I’m such a huge fan of Gogglebox so it’s going to be weirdly surreal to actually be part of it with two of my closest friends but when it’s for an incredible cause like Stand Up To Cancer, how could we say no?"

What is Anne-Marie's favourite memory with Ed Sheeran?

Anne-Marie told Northsound 1: "There are so many, but touring around the world with him, creating ‘2002’, going around his house to watch Game of Thrones and I said I don’t like spicy food and he made the spiciest fajitas ever and ate them all!"

Ed Sheeran once helped Anne-Marie through a panic attack

Anne-Marie has been open and honest about her mental health over the past couple of years, even becoming an ambassador for the charity MIND. She opened up about struggling with anxiety and panic attacks in an interview with Ranvir Singh on Lorraine in July 2021, revealing that Ed had actually helped her through one.

"He’s actually incredible, he’s been one of my favourite people to have in this industry as a friend," she gushed. "Whenever I write a song I send it to him and he gives me advice on a song or he collaborates with me on the album.

"The other day I had a panic attack and I emailed him going, 'I’m feeling ok, I just had a panic attack', and he goes, 'Are you ok, do you want me to call?'", adding that the 'Shape of You' hitmaker had been "honestly incredible".

What advice did Ed Sheeran give Anne-Marie?

Anne-Marie has said on numerous occasions that the main thing Ed taught her was to stay grounded and stay true to herself. She told the New York Post: "I’ve learned to stay myself. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned from him, because he is completely the same as he was before all the success. He made me realise that you don’t have to change to be a pop star.

She added to Hot Press: "Really the best advice was just to keep grounded and stay determined."

In May 2021, she gushed over her friendship with the superstar, saying on the Make It Reign podcast: "Ed Sheeran has always been someone I could go to for any advice on the industry because he just knows how to do it, he’s a pro at it. So everytime I feel a certain way, I just ask him and he tells me what he’s gone through.

"You know, he’s so successful and everyone loves him and you never think he would have a down day or struggled with something or worried about his next single, because all of his singles go to number 1’s but he has. So I speak to him about everything to be honest."
