Walt Disney Studios have today confirmed they will be teaming up with filmmaker Jon Favreau to 'reimagine' one of their most popular films, The Lion King in a live-action remake.

The remake has been ‘fast tracked to production’ following the major success of The Jungle Book, which has taken $965.8million worldwide since its release in April.

According to Disney “The Lion King builds on Disney’s success of reimagining its classics for a contemporary audience with films like Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast."

Filmmaker Jon Favreau teased fans on his ‘new project’ with a tweet before Disney’s official confirmation.

The original movie was released back in 1994 and to this day remains the highest grossing hand-drawn animated film of all time. As well as the movies success, The Lion King has been a hugely successful Broadway musical for the last 19 years.

The new film is set to include songs from the movie but unlike the films they have remade so far, The Lion King involves no human characters, leaving fans wondering how the live-action reimagining will work.

Upon hearing the news, fans took to social media to express their opinion on the remake, it seems not everybody is happy with the news.

No official release date for the film is yet to be announced.
