Hundreds of thousands of teenagers and mature students across Scotland are anxiously waiting for the postie to arrive with their SQA certificate.

This year the examining board, SQA, made slight changes to courses to reflect the ongoing disruption to classes caused by covid.

"There is support and advisors out there"

Scottish Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville told Northsound 1: "Exams are back but we know that this still has not been a normal year for our young people.

"They have faced significant disruptions as they've gone through their schooling.

"I know this can be an extremely nervous time, but the really important thing is for them to know that there is support and advisors out there to talk them through different options and opportunities open to them."

Some students have signed up to getting their grades by email and text and these will be released gradually from 8am.

"There are so many ways to reach your goal"

Jennifer Whelan is one of fifty advisors from Skills Development Scotland taking calls all day from people disappointed about their grades to those who don't know what to do next.

She said: "Sometimes young people phone up asking how to appeal their grades or they can have questions about college applications or courses they have applied for.

"I can also help them with UCAS and confirmation about clearing.

"There are always other options for people who don't get what they want as there are just so many different routes and pathways to things.

"It could be doing an apprenticeship, college or university, but there are so many ways to reach your goal.

"We look at what your strengths are and what you enjoy and we will help you to make sense of your next steps."
