A hillwalker has suffered a serious injury after falling near Lock Muick on New Year's Day.

Braemar Mountain Rescue Team were called out to Balmoral Estate on January 1 at around 1pm following reports of a female casualty.

Five members of the team were deployed, including the coastguard helicopter crew.

The group were making their way back to their vehicle when the woman lost her footing and slid around 10 metres down a slope.

The casualty was treated by paramedics on scene before being transported onto the helicopter and taken to hospital.

Bill Dallas from Braemar Mountain Rescue Team said: "They were making their way back to their vehicle when she lost her footing and slid about 10 metres.

"She was not wearing crampons but the conditions were marginal for those, the team said they were breaking through the crust which had formed on the snow and into the heather. Otherwise they were properly equipped for the conditions."

The incident was Braemar Rescue Team's first call out of the year.

A post on the rescue team's Facebook page said: "A seriously injured walker requiring evacuation near Loch Muick. Team members attended to assist and escort the group safely home."
