A historic Aberdeen road name is to disappear from signs and maps forever.

It’s been announced today that the Lang Stracht is to be renamed the “Langer Stracht” ahead of the opening of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

The Lang Stracht, the name given to the section of the A944 which runs between the junction with North Anderson Drive and the roundabout with Skene Road in Aberdeen, will soon disappear from maps forever.

The newly named section of thoroughfare will extend past the junction with Skene Road, along the dual carriageway, to the soon to be created junction with the AWPR between Kingswells and Westhill.

It is being renamed "Langer Stracht" to reflect the new longer langer route.

The decision to rename the road comes at a time when the city is making significant investments in the AWPR peripheral route, and by altering the name of one of Aberdeen’s most well-known roads, it is believed it will help motorists better identify and navigate the key route into Aberdeen from the west.

‘Langer Stracht’ reflects the clear adaption of the original name Lang Stracht, which has origins that can be traced as far back as 1803.

It’s not the first time the road name has been at risk. Work took place to curve the route to meet Skene Road in the 1990s, in turn creating the Kingswells park and ride and bus only route, discussions were held over the legitimacy of keeping the name which means Long Straight after the addition of a curve.

The name change is expected to be in place before the official opening of the new Aberdeen bypass, but an exact date is yet to be confirmed.
