A Christmas lights switch on event in Aberdeenshire has been cancelled amid electricity concerns.

Police cordoned off Market Square in Stonehaven on Sunday afternoon as a safety precaution and asked the public to avoid the area.

It is understood that dogs have been injured by the potential underground electric fault.

The event, which was due to take place today, was called off at the request of the police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are currently in attendance at Market Square in Stonehaven following concerns raised about the electricity network in the area.

“The area has been evacuated as a precaution and nobody has been injured.

“SSE Networks has been made aware.”
