A majority of small businesses in Scotland have cited action to tackle high costs as a top priority for the next UK Government, a new poll has indicated.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) survey also shows more than half see a “good Brexit deal” as a key issue.

A total of 262 Scottish firms were questioned between May 8 and 12 as part of a UK-wide survey on their priorities during the coming parliamentary term.

More than half - 56% - said reducing businesses costs was key while 53% want a “good Brexit” for small firms.

In addition, 44% want action to tackle the problems the self-employed face in accessing social security support and pensions.

A total of 41% said delivering regional growth should be a key priority, with similar proportions urging infrastructure investment (37%) and asking for help to create jobs (34%).

Andy Willox, FSB's Scottish policy convener, said: “Hundreds of thousands of Scots are self-employed or run a small business.

“More people work for themselves north of the border than work for the NHS.

“These hardest of hardworking voters are looking for the next UK Government to keep on top of the domestic agenda as well as deliver a Brexit deal which works for every locality and sector.

“They're looking for Members of Parliament who recognise the pivotal role that local firms play in economies and communities across the nation.”
