The Prime Minister has told us the G7 will be a 'great and lasting benefit' to Carbis Bay, St Ives and the whole of Cornwall.

Boris Johnson was speaking during a trip to the Duchy, after announcing a £23.6 million funding boost for Truro.

He also toured Cornwall Airport Newquay to see the upgrades happening ahead of the three-day summit of world leaders.

That includes making sure planes like Air Force One can land.

Boris Johnson has told Cornwall the G7 is looking good to go ahead in June

"I think the G7, I hope that it will be a great benefit and a lasting benefit to Carbis Bay, to the St Ives area but also the wider Cornwall area and at Newquay Airport I have seen what they are doing with the aprons so that Air Force One can land and Macron, all the planes can land properly.

"That will be something that can be used for the long term and there are all sorts of other improvements and I hope it will bring a lot of bustle and activity and stimulate and be part of what I hope will be a really good season and it is so important that people are opening up on Monday and we can see people getting ready already.

"We are hoping that it will be a great, great season, but we are also investing here in Truro £23m fund that we are putting in, the growth fund that is coming in and the getting building funding and the Newquay Airport funding and Penzance. We are trying to stimulate it and we hope that with people coming back to Cornwall it will be very lively".

We asked whether the G7 would definitely take place in June, to which Mr Johnson replied: "At the moment that is our expectation, you have to be humble in the face of nature, the roadmap is there, these are not the full dates I have to remind everybody of that but at the moment it is looking OK, it is looking good".

The Prime Minister was welcomed to Cornwall Airport Newquay by local MP, Steve Double, who has praised the £7.8 million investment into the airport.

"It was great to welcome the Prime Minister to Cornwall today (Wednesday) as he landed at Newquay Airport.

"He was able to have a tour and see for himself the work that has begun to upgrade parts of the airport ahead of the G7 leaders summit.

"This is part of the £7.8million the government has invested to not only prepare for the G7 but also as a long-term investment that will assist in making the airport ready for the Spaceport.

"With the airport due to open again on 30th April and plans progressing to begin satellite launches next year, this funding will not only help secure the future of the airport which is vital for the Cornish economy, it will also pave the way for further invest and job creation when our Spaceport begins operations".
