The final issue of Planet Rock magazine is a celebration of the full spectrum of rock music, paying tribute to old masters (Deep Purple, Genesis), maverick game-changers (Jane’s Addiction, The Damned, Metallica), and a bold new generation set to light up the decade ahead (Biffy Clyro, Blues Pills, A.A. Williams).

Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic give us the inside stories on Kurt Cobain and Nirvana

The cover stars of PR 22 are Nirvana, the band who ushered in a new age for rock music in the ’90s. Surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic salute the complicated genius of the late Kurt Cobain and give us the inside stories on the making of Nevermind and In Utero, two of the defining albums of rock’s modern age.

We catch up with pioneering British rock legends Deep Purple in lockdown, as they extend their long goodbye with the release of their 21st studio album, the rather excellent Whoosh! Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover also look back at the making of the seminal Deep Purple In Rock album, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

In our Classic Album feature, we reveal how Genesis not only survived, but actually thrived, following the departure of frontman Peter Gabriel, as Phil Collins stepped out from behind the drum kit to launch the English prog rock band’s second act with A Trick Of The Tail. The Cult Heroes section salutes subversive LA art-rock collective Jane’s Addiction and we join The Damned’s enigmatic frontman Dave Vanian to discuss his moth collection and more in a highly entertaining Planet Rock Interview.

For this issue’s Eyewitness feature Don Dokken takes us back to a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of rock and metal superstars for the making of Stars, the charity single from Hear ’N Aid, former Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider chooses the songs which set his teenage mind ablaze in My Planet Rocks, Sammy Hagar shares the stories behind the making of Van Halen classic Right Now, and Planet Rock’s own Alice Cooper recalls mind-bending adventures in LA with his old pals Pink Floyd in our final Nights Out… feature.

All this plus Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, REO Speedwagon, Biffy Clyro, Therapy?, Kerbdog, Blues Pills, A.A. Williams and a load of suggestions for albums which you lot believe should have been included in our 100 Greatest Live Albums Ever feature last time out.
