Backwards Beatles Photo Goes To Auction
A rare alternative shot of the legendary Abbey Road image is to be sold
The picture, which you can see on the right, features the Beatles being led by John Lennon walking from right to left, rather than the iconic image of them going from left to right.
The other difference is that in this shot Paul McCartney is wearing sandles, whereas on the album cover he is walking bare foot. The cigarette from the album cover is also missing (probably just out of shot).
The shot was one of just a handful of photographs taken by the late photographer Iain Macmillan as a police officer held up traffic in St John's Wood, London, to allow the band to cross the road a handful of times.
Sarah Wheeler, of Bloomsbury Auctions, in London, said: "Macmillan had 10 minutes to do the shoot and he took six photographs of the Beatles walking backwards and forwards across the zebra crossing. He was standing up a ladder to take the pictures.
"The photo has been called an icon of the 1960s. I think the reason it became so popular is its simplicity. It's a very simple, stylised shot and is a shot people can relate to."
The auction takes place on 22 May and this print is one of 25 created to be sold by a private collector.
