Deep Purple have premiered a 2024 remix of their ubiquitous, riff-tastic 1972 anthem ‘Smoke on the Water.’

Clocking on at six minutes and nine seconds – almost half a minute longer than the original album version, but shorter than Roger Glover’s 1997 mix – the new version has been remixed by Dweezil Zappa.

Dweezil’s dad, Frank Zappa, was of course quoted in the second verse of ‘Smoke in the Water’ with Ian Gillian singing: ‘Frank Zappa and the Mothers / Were at the best place around / But some stupid with a flare gun / Burned the place to the ground.’

And for comparison sake, here’s the remastered original:

The new remix of ‘Smoke on the Water’ appears on the upcoming Super Deluxe Edition of Deep Purple’s sixth album ‘Machine Head’, which is released on Friday 29th March 2024 as a 3-CD/LP/Blu-ray collection.

Costing £99.99, the multi-disc release includes several different versions of the album, including new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes by Dweezil Zappa.

The Super Deluxe Edition also contains two Deep Purple live performances from the early seventies.

Most notable is an unreleased performance at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland in April 1971. The band planned to record ‘Machine Head’ there that December, but the venue burned down right before the sessions began, an event immortalized in ‘Smoke On The Water.’

The other live performance was recorded on 9th March 1972 at Paris Theatre in London during the Machine Head Tour.

Commenting on Deep Purple’s ‘Machine Head’, Dweezil Zappa says: “It’s one of those records where I think, ‘How did they come up with this?’

“It’s got classical influences in the guitar and the keyboard, but then it’s got the blues and there’s little bits of funkiness. And you have this singer who has the most killer voice.

“All these things come together in a way where it doesn’t sound like commercial music, yet people got really excited about it. It’s a fascinating recipe.”
