British movie Bank of Dave is now streaming on Netflix, and it features a cameo from Sheffield rock legends Def Leppard.

Starring Rory Kinnear (best known for playing Bill Tanner in several James Bond films) as Dave, Bank of Dave is based on the true story of self-made millionaire Dave Fishwick.

In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Fishwick set up his own bank in his hometown of Burnley, Lancashire to help inject much-needed life into local businesses and to prove that banks can be socially responsible by donating any profits to charity.

Fishwick’s company Burnley Savings & Loans Ltd became the first ethical High Street Bank to open in 120 years in the UK.

He wrote a book about his experience of creating the bank, aptly called Bank of Dave, and it has now inspired a Netflix movie of the same name.

Def Leppard started teasing their involvement in the movie in March 2022 when they shared a photograph of a stage set with the famous Def Leppard logo in the backdrop.

The stage was actually set up at Burnley Football Club’s Turf Moor stadium and Def Leppard performed alongside Rory Kinnear (aka Dave) and Paul Kaye (Dave's best mate Rick Purdey) during the shoot.

Although Bank of Dave is based on reality, the fictional scene involving Def Leppard was created especially for the movie.

Last year, Planet Rock's very own Joe Elliott discussed Def Leppard’s role in Bank of Dave and why they got involved.

“Bank of Dave is kinda like the new Full Monty, the new Amongst Giants, the new Brassed Off,” Joe explained to Darren Redick. “It's one of those classic British low budget but really cool movies.

“(A) true story about a gentleman in Burnley, who was not having much joy with a bank, so he decided to start his own bank. It's only like 12 years ago that this happened and he's a bit of a Def Leppard fan.

“What they did is they kind of wrote us into the story and they've obviously enhanced the story somewhat because our part in the movie didn't really happen. One of his mates, the character of one of his friends knows me for 30 years and says, ‘I think I might be able to get Def Leppard to do a fundraiser for you.’

“So, long story short, we do this fundraiser at Turf Moor (Burnley’s football stadium) to raise money so he can start this bank and help out all the locals that were getting no help from the banks.

“We got to perform three songs in this movie. I don't know how many will survive or hit the cutting room floor, but you always over film so that they've got enough. We all really thought it was a cute thing.”

Bank of Dave is available to watch on Netflix now.
