Iggy Pop reveals he was asked to join AC/DC
He turned down the offer
Stooges legend Iggy Pop has revealed he was once asked to sing for AC/DC.
The 75-year-old 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' singer recently sat down for a wide-ranging chat with The New York Times to promote his new solo album ‘Every Loser’ when he made the surprise AC/DC revelation.
Pop said: "They had a manager many years ago, when I hadn't reformed The Stooges, I hadn't moved to England. And this guy said, 'Are you interested in joining AC/DC?' They were looking for a singer."
Explaining that he didn’t think he was the right fit, Pop continued: "I listened to their record. I thought, I can't fit that bill. I wasn't, like, 'Ugh, I don't like them.' It was quite well made. They do careful work, but I'm not what they needed."
It’s unclear whether Iggy was approached following the untimely death of AC/DC frontman Bon Scott in 1980 or at an earlier time.
Speaking to Planet Rock back in December 2020, former Slade frontman Noddy Holder said that he was also approached for the AC/DC gig.
“They did approach me - not directly to me but they approached my management - whether I’d like to join AC/DC,” Noddy told Wyatt. “I think they probably heard that Slade was sort of on the verge of breaking up and apparently, I was approached to join them.
“I said I’d turn it down, y’know, I still got in my head that Slade was still a force to be reckoned with and that we’d still be carrying on. But I would have turned it down anyway because Slade was my baby; it was the thing that I worked with for years, worked hard with for years.”
Asked if he regretted the decision, Holder replied: “No, I don't regret it at all. If I was to go back in time, I'd have probably made exactly the same decision.”
Former Geordie frontman Brian Johnson was recruited to AC/DC’s ranks in April 1980 and he made his debut on their blockbuster album ‘Back in Black.’
Iggy Pop releases his nineteenth solo album ‘Every Loser’ on 6th January 2023, and it features a raft of guest performers including Duff McKagan, Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer, Travis Barker, Stone Gossard, Dave Navarro and the late-great Taylor Hawkins.
Last month,Pop confirmed he was retiring from stage divingat the sprightly age of 75.
