Ozzy Osbourne slaps Kanye West with cease and desist letter over 'Iron Man' sample

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne issued Kanye West with a cease and desist letter after he sampled a performance of Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’ allegedly without permission.
On Friday night (9th February), Ozzy Osbourne took to social media to strongly condemn the controversial rapper for sampling a 1983 live recording of ‘Iron Man’ on his new album ‘Vultures.’
Ozzy has co-songwriting credits on ‘Iron Man’ alongside his former Black Sabbath band mates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward.
In angry capital letters, Ozzy wrote: ‘Kanye West ASKED PERMISSION TO SAMPLE A SECTION OF A 1983 LIVE PERFORMANCE OF “IRON MAN” FROM THE US FESTIVAL WITHOUT VOCALS & WAS REFUSED PERMISSION BECAUSE HE IS AN ANTISEMITE AND HAS CAUSED UNTOLD HEARTACHE TO MANY. HE WENT AHEAD AND USED THE SAMPLE ANYWAY AT HIS ALBUM LISTENING PARTY LAST NIGHT. I WANT NO ASSOCIATION WITH THIS MAN!’
Kanye West is reported to have played the ‘Iron Man’ clip during an event promoting his new album on 8th February at the United Center in Chicago.
Speaking to TMZ about the alleged unauthorised sample, Ozzy’s wife and manager Sharon Osbourne confirmed they issued West with a cease and desist letter.
Sharon labelled West as a "disrespectful antisemite” who “represents hate”, and added: "Kanye f---ed with the wrong Jew this time."
She went to explain that Ozzy normally doesn’t refuse to clear samples but he had “special f---ing occasion to say no” in West’s case.
According to Rolling Stone, West has now removed the sample from the track ‘Carnival.’
In its place, West has sampled his 2010 song ‘Hell of a Life’, which is inspired by ‘Iron Man’ and lists Black Sabbath on the songwriting credits.
Kanye West was accused of antisemitism in October 2022 following a series of highly controversial social media posts.
In the wake of the backlash, West was ditched by his lawyer, talent agency and record label, and numerous high profile fashion brands cancelled their lucrative contracts with him.
Last month, Sharon Osbourne revealed that Ozzy is planning a huge homecoming concert at Villa Park in Birmingham this summer as a goodbye to his fans.
