It's hitting cinemas this autumn
To mark what would have been Phil Lynott’s 71st birthday today (20th August), the first official trailer for the upcoming feature documentary Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away has premiered.
Set to hit cinemas this autumn, Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away is directed by award-winning Irish filmmaker Emer Reynolds and it's produced Alan Maher and John Wallace of Ireland’s Cowtown Pictures, alongside Peter Worsley of London-based music documentary makers Eagle Rock Films.
According to Eagle Rock, the movie tells the “story of how a young black boy from working class 1950's Dublin became Ireland's greatest Rock Star”, before his untimely death in 1986 aged just 36.
They add: “As the lead singer of Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott was a songwriter, a poet, a dreamer, a wildman. Told extensively through the words of Phil himself and focusing on some of his iconic songs, the film gets to the heart of Philip, the father, the husband, the friend, the son, the rock icon, the poet and the dreamer.”
Clocking in at two minutes, the trailer features archive footage and interviews with Phil Lynott himself, plus quotes from his friends, contemporaries and artists influenced by the late music legend.

Among the contributors to the documentary film are Phil’s Thin Lizzy band mates Eric Bell, Scott Gorham and Darren Wharton, plus Metallica’s James Hetfield, Huey Lewis, U2’s Adam Clayton, Suzi Quatro and Midge Ure.
Unveiling the trailer on Twitter, director Emer Reynolds said: “SO looking forward bring our film about the incomparable Philip Lynott to cinemas this Autumn!”
She previously commented: “Having been a huge Thin Lizzy fan throughout my life, it’s an incredible honour to be bringing this celebratory and intimate portrait of lead singer and songwriter Philip Lynott to the big screen.”
Emer Reynolds’ acclaimed 2017 film ‘The Farthest: Voyager in Space’ won the Emmy for outstanding science and technology documentary at the 2018 Emmy Awards.
