PHOTO: Bon Scott honoured with permanent sculpture on Melbourne’s AC/DC Lane
Late AC/DC legend Bon Scott is being immortalised with a sculpture in Australia.
The ‘bas-relief’ sculpture - a low relief carved from a wall - of Scottish born Bon comes out of the historic Cherry Bar brick wall on Melbourne’s AC/DC Lane. It’s three metres high, two metres wide and protrudes 15cm.
Officially supported by the Victorian Government’s 'Rockin’ The Laneways' initiative, the statue has been created by street artist Mike Makatron after Cherry Bar owner James Young came up with the concept.
The sculpture will be officially unveiled at 11am local time on Tuesday 6th March, however Australian publicists Jameson & Co have shared this image ahead of the launch showing Mike Makatron at work on the installation:
Mike Makatron is primarily a painter of murals and canvas and although with lots of experience with small sculptures and installations, it’s his first large-scale piece of this kind.
He says: “I’ve painted the laneway annually for about five years now - always a varied interpretation of the theme of music and it’s an honour to add a permanent 3D element that pays tribute to a great Australian rock and roll band and its lead singer Bon Scott, but also to music in general.
“Thanks to all, especially the vision of James Young of Cherry Bar who instigated the idea and grant application with Creative Victoria.”
James Young says that AC/DC Lane is “the perfect place to honour Bon Scott and to provide inspiration for aspiring musicians and music fans the world over.”
Makatron was helped creating the concrete and high-density polystyrene sculpture by expert Steven Carroll who utilised techniques to achieve clothing textures and cracked stone.
Additionally, Richie Red Steel created the metal backing plate, while the 'brick explosion' work is aided by scenic artist Rob Gough.
Born in Forfar, Scotland and raised in Kirriemuir, Bon Scott and his family moved to Melbourne when he was six-years-old before they eventually settled in Freemantle.
A bronze statue of Bon was unveiled at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour in 2008 and in 2016 the singer was honoured with a sculpture in Bellies Brae Car Park in Kirriemuir. The statue was funded by AC/DC fans.
