Beneath their unashamedly joyous, seemingly squeaky-clean pop façade, songs by Swedish music legends ABBA often have an extremely dark underbelly dealing with themes like relationship breakdowns, paranoia and loss of youth. ‘I'm A Marionette’, for example, is a bleak depiction of a beleaguered singer being used by the music industry and the audience for their own selfish means.
It’s no surprise then that ABBA’s heady musical brew of infectious melodies and hard-hitting lyrics piques the interest of rock and metal bands, giving us some iconic ABBA metal covers.
