Yorkshire metal titans Saxon have announced they’re releasing a covers album called ‘Inspirations’.

As the title suggests, ‘Inspirations’ will feature a collection of songs that inspired and influenced Saxon to pursue their trailblazing path in the heavy metal world.

Saxon frontman Biff Byford announced ‘Inspirations’ in a video message to fans last night (17th November) and confirmed the band are in the final stages of the recording process.

A release date is yet to be confirmed, but ‘Inspirations’ will be preceded by a single very “soon” and Biff has promised the record boasts some “big songs” and “some surprises.” Intriguing stuff.

Biff Byford said: “I wanted to tell you about a project we’re getting really excited about – I’m just finishing the vocals off now. It’s going to be a cover album.

“Somebody had the idea of doing something a bit of fun, because our new Saxon album has been put back until next year. So yeah, we're gonna call it ‘Inspirations’, and it's a collection of songs that inspired us and influenced us to go down the rock 'n' roll highway looking for fame and fortune. So yeah, there's some big songs on there, there's some surprises, some really difficult songs to play, and to sing.

“We like doing it. I’ve just finished it off now, finished the last vocal tonight. We did it in the old way – all Marshall cabs, all Marshall amps, real drums in a huge hallway in a big stately home. There’s going to be a video about that soon. We’re going to drop a single soon so keep your eyes open for that!

“Stay safe around the planet and we’ll see you all real soon.”

Saxon are due to play headline UK shows at London Eventim Apollo, Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom and Manchester O2 Apollo in May 2021.

The 40th Anniversary Eagles & Castles Tour dates in London, Glasgow and Manchester were originally due to take place in October 2019, however Saxon rescheduled them for March 2020 after singer Biff Byford underwent emergency heart surgery.

Ten days before these March 2020 shows were due to start, Saxon rearranged them for August and September 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. These dates were then pushed back again to May next year.

Saxon play the following shows:

MAY 2021

London Eventim Apollo – Sat 1st

Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom – Sun 2nd

Manchester O2 Apollo – Mon 3rd (Bank Holiday Monday)
