The Piano Man was midway through his 111th all-time performance (and unprecedented 65th consecutive show in his monthly residency) at the Manhattan venue when the Def Leppard frontman and Planet Rock DJ extraordinaire appeared on stage.

With Billy Joel tinkling the ivories, Joe sang Def Leppard’s ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ in front of the 20,000-strong capacity crowd.

Billy Joel has a longstanding history of bringing out guest performers at his concerts. Last month’s Madison Square Garden gig saw Peter Frampton perform on versions of his own songs ‘Show Me the Way’ and ‘Baby, I Love Your Way’, plus set closer ‘You May Be Right’.

AC/DC’s Brian Johnson guested on ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ at Madison Square Garden in March 2014, and Axl Rose performed AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’ at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in May 2017.

Last November, Joe Perry collapsed backstage at Joel’s MSG gig just moments after guesting on ‘Walk This Way’.

Def Leppard headline Download Festival on Friday 14th June and appear on a weekend bill that boasts Slipknot, Tool, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators, Whitesnake, Clutch, Halestorm, Slayer (final UK show), Stone Temple Pilots, Rob Zombie, Anthrax, Blackberry Smoke and dozens more.
