The concert season continues on May 17th, with a performance by one of the most popular European orchestras, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. The programme begins with Smetana’s delightful tone poem The Moldau, followed by Bruch’s ravishing Violin Concerto, performed by one of this country’s most distinguished violinists, Chloe Hanslip. Under the baton of Steven Mercurio, the concert concludes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8.
See below for a recap of what we have seen at G Live this season:
Kicking off on September 13th 2023, the Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra returned after their successful UK debut tour. Led by conductor Andras Keller, they were joined by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard for a performance of Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3. The evening continued with Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 - “Eroica”.
On October 20th 2023, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, led by Music Director Volodymyr Sirenko, graced the stage. Despite facing challenges, Ukrainian musicians embarked on an extensive UK tour, and Guildford is honoured to host them. The program included Sibelius’ ‘Finlandia’, Strauss's ‘Don Juan’, followed by Symphony No. 2 by Borys Lyatoshynsky - the greatest of all Ukrainian composers, - and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 performed by Antonii Baryshevskyi.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra took the spotlight on November 10th 2023, with conductor Manoj Kamps. The concert featured Wagner's enchanting Prelude to Act 1 of Lohengrin, pianist Federico Colli performing Rachmaninov's ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini’, and Brahms's Symphony No. 2.
On February 24th the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Shiyeon Sung. Artist-in-Residence, Zlatomir Fung, played Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major, in a programme that also included Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3 and Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, 'From the New World'.
Still to come, on April 11, 2024, the English Piano Trio, accompanied by actors Christopher Ravenscroft and Ann Penfold, take the stage, combining narratives and excerpts from Beethoven's letters with his piano trios and sonatas.
The season concludes on May 17, 2024, with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ilya Mashkevich. The program includes Smetana's delightful "The Moldau," Bruch's ravishing Violin Concerto featuring Chloe Hanslip, and Dvořák's majestic Symphony No. 8.
