The British Book Awards 2023: Winners Announced

The winners of the 2023 British Book Awards have been revealed

Internationally bestselling novelist, Bonnie Garmus, was named the Author of the Year at the British Book Awards 2023, winning the award for her debut novel Lessons in Chemistry. Garmus's novel received five nominations across the Book of the Year and Book Trade Award shortlists, including Marketing Campaign of the Year and Publicity Campaign of the Year.

The British Book Awards ceremony, held at Grosvenor House London, also saw Alice Oseman, creator of the bestselling Heartstopper graphic novels, being awarded the Illustrator of the Year award. Oseman was praised for building a community of devoted fans and celebrating diverse voices for a younger audience.

The Book of the Year in the Crime and Thriller category, backed by the Scala Radio Book Club, was awarded to The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett. This gripping novel received acclaim for its unique approach within the cosy crime genre and its compelling high-concept narrative. It emerged victorious over the tough competition, including Murder Before Evensong by Reverend Richard Coles and The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman.

The Fiction Book of the Year went to R.K. Kuang's Babel, which was a huge breakout success, and UK editor Natasha Bardon and imprint HarperVoyager also won awards. Louise Kennedy won the Debut award for her well-regarded Trespasses.

However, it was Menopausing, a book about menopause by Davina McCall and Dr. Naomi Potter, that was named the Overall Book of the Year. Menopausing won the Non-Fiction Lifestyle & Illustrated Book of the Year category, and its publisher HQ was also shortlisted for Imprint of the Year and Marketing Campaign of the Year.

The British Book Awards celebrate the authors and illustrators who have stirred our hearts and imaginations and the industry behind the scenes who have brought them to readers. The judges opted to reward exceptional and compelling narratives expertly brought to market, with the book trade lauded for its commitment to promoting all types of reading for all types of readers.
