John Williams has broken the record as the oldest person to be nominated for an Oscar, excluding honorary awards, for his work on Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical feature The Fabelmans.

Mere days before celebrating his 91st birthday, Williams has also broken his own record as being the most nominated living person with 53 Oscar nominations. Only Walt Disney has more with an impressive 59 nominations under his belt.

This new record comes after Williams surpasses Call Me by Your Name screenwriter James Ivory, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom costume designer Ann Roth, and Faces Places director Agnès Varda who were all 89 at the time of their nominations.

The ceremony for the 95th Oscars which take place on the 12th of March, and should Williams win he will be taking home his sixth Oscar, having previously won for Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Jaws (1975), Star Wars (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Schindler’s List (1993), he will also claim James Ivory’s record as being the oldest Oscar winner.

Williams suggested in 2022 that the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 may be the last film he would score, however, to shared delight he has also revealed that he might “stick around for a while,” revealing that he “can’t retire from music.”
