We caught up with saxophonist Amy Dickson to find out about her latest recording ‘Truth, and then there were teardrops’.

Pianist, composer, and Scala Radio presenter, Alexis Ffrench wrote the piece for Amy. ‘The same people at Sony look after Alexis and me, they know my playing very well… I think they knew that there would be a bit of magic when they put us together.’

Though ‘Truth, and then there were teardrops’ was released at the start of this year, recording the piece was actually completed days before the first lockdown in March of last year. ‘I had no idea what was coming. We were so lucky. The word magic has definitely cropped up a few times.’

Due to the complications that have been experienced due to Covid over the last year, Amy’s 2-year-old daughter, Olivia accompanied her during the filming of the accompanying music video. ‘It was in a break between lockdowns, and we had my two-year-old running around. So, a lot of the shots are from the waist up, whilst there's also a two-year-old pulling on my skirt from the waist down.

‘She was, until this happened, very used to coming to concerts, and she came to her first concert when she was three months old, I think, or four months old. She's grown up in the concert hall.

‘One of my favourite things today is after the general rehearsal, which is the dress rehearsal before the concert usually happens in the morning, before an evening concert. There's not a lot of rehearsing that gets done, but afterward, it's always lovely, because everybody's there together. So many times I've brought Olivia on to the stage to meet all the orchestral musicians and there have been some really beautiful moments. It's a real privilege to be able to include her in the backstage behind the scenes stuff.’
