There’s much excitement at Scala Radio this week as we make the final arrangements for our 'Scala Radio Sessions Live' this Saturday night – three hours of music that brings classical music and classically-inspired music from the homes of artists in lockdown to our listeners.

Angellica Bell hosts the evening's proceedings from 8pm. Scala’s evening presenter Hannah Cox will have a special pre- show from 7pm featuring album tracks from all of the artists.

Saxophonist Amy Dickson opens the special event for UK Music Day at 8pm, followed at 8.30pm by violin and piano duo Avawaves who were last in the Scala Radio studio back in January 2020.

Harpist Lauren Scott

Harpist Lauren Scott whose recent release Beyond the Horizons was a Scala Radio Album of the Week, takes her place on our virtual stage at 9.00pm with a set spotlighting the lever harp.

The blend of folk and far eastern sounds makes her contemporary classical score an escapist treat right now. Speaking to Simon Mayo about the album release earlier this year Lauren explained why she had reverted to the instrument she learned as a child when writing the music for Beyond the Horizon: “I rediscovered this instrument and found what a great sound it could have”.

All this week MJ Cole’s latest release has also been Scala Radio’s Album of the Week so it's an extra special treat to see him feature in our Scala Radio Sessions Live line-up.

Classically trained Cole is best known for his electronica tracks, but has taken a diversion with a subtle mix of electronic ambience mixed with luxurious string textures. MJ features in our line-up from 9.30pm.

Soprano Elin Manahan Thomas steps into the digital spotlight from 10pm with a range of vocal music by Thomas Arne, Handel, and John Rutter.

Violinist Jack Liebeck with trusted lockdown pal Mollie the Dog

Violinist Jack Liebeck concludes our evening on Scala Radio on Saturday night. Liebeck’s most recent release on Orchid Classics pairs the ever popular Brahms Violin Concerto with Schoenberg’s concerto. Jack also utilises his four-legged lockdown pal - Mollie the Dog - on the album cover. At the time of writing, Mollie’s appearance in Scala Radio Sessions Live was unconfirmed.

Join us on Scala Radio for an evening of especially recorded music on Saturday night hosted by Angellica Bell. Scala Radio Live kicks off with Hannah Cox’s pre-show from 7pm.
