Iconic festive character The Snowman appears on new 50p coin⛄️

It's only been just over a week since The Royal Mint launched the Piglet 50p coin to complete the Winnie the Pooh collection, and now they've already announced another collectable 50p coin.

This time, The Royal Mint has got all festive with the release of The Snowman 50p coin. The design shows The Snowman and James hugging, reflecting how the timeless tale brings people together at Christmas.

To launch the special coin, The Royal Mint has also released a Sketch-a-long video, where the designer of the coin Robin Shaw - who is an award-winning animator and illustrator, provides hints and tips to help animators create their own Snowman drawings.

Speaking about his involvement with the new 50p coin, Robin said, "I’m delighted to have worked with The Royal Mint once more to bring The Snowman to life on a fifty pence. In a year where many of us have been separated, The Snowman helps remind us of the importance of a hug and our love for one another.

"In creating the 2020 design I wanted to capture this unique bond between The Snowman and James in recognition of Raymond Briggs’ timeless tale which unites us each Christmas."

The new design is a commemorative coin only and will not be entering circulation. It will be available in various types from Brilliant Uncirculated Coin, up to a Gold Proof Coin.

The classic Christmas story was first published in 1978 and adapted for television in 1982 where The Snowman was brought to life and watching the programme became a Christmas tradition for many families up and down the country.
