This January Scala Radio invites listeners to ‘Take a Moment’ as it dedicates part of its programming to the calming and uplifting nature of classical music.

With a focus on wellness, mindfulness and musical discovery across the station, Scala is hoping to help their listeners start the new year in a positive and relaxed way.

Whether you need a little help to get focused in the morning or some headspace in the evening, Scala Radio has the perfect soundtrack to ease your mind. Each morning In The Park wakes listeners with soothing classical sounds interspersed with natural soundscapes like birdsong, and then in the evening, The Space will offer musical peace and quiet every night from 10pm with an extended show for 2022 and a special guest curator Eric Whitacre.

During the day Sam Hughes continues her Mindfulness Moment every weekday at 2.15pm, and Hannah Cox will present an extended Mindfulness Music selection on Monday to Thursday evenings from 9-10pm.

Alongside this Scala Radio has also dedicated a range of new programming to reflect the ‘Take a Moment’ theme. Details of the shows can be found below:

Gemma Cairney Gets Classical (Sunday 6-8pm) – This new 5-part series sees musical magpie Gemma Cairney immerse herself in classical music. It’s no secret that the beginning of the year can be challenging for many and with this in mind, Gemma will be exploring her own emotional reaction to different types of classical music. Gemma’s passion about mental health will form a key part of this series, as we give listeners an opportunity to learn with her about the power of classical music to help, heal and offer hope in hard times. January is an important time to focus on our well-being, and Gemma’s positive attitude will bring joy and happiness into the homes of Scala Radio listeners.

The Space Guest Curator Eric Whitacre (24th –28th January 10pm-1am) – For one week in January, we’re welcoming the Grammy-winning composer, conductor and pioneer of choral music Eric Whitacre to be guest curator of The Space. Famous for his Virtual Choir project and his innovative choral arrangements of rock and pop hits, Eric will select his favourite ‘late night’ music, so expect an eclectic, albeit peaceful, mix.

Alexis Ffrench (Sunday 3-5pm) – Scala Radio’s Composer in Residence Alexis Ffrench welcomes in the New Year with a carefully crafted blend of music that will make you feel good. No January blues around here! Alexis selects the music every Sunday between 3 and 5pm, and across January, the focus is on relaxing classical compositions that will be sure to put your mind at ease.

Penny Smith (Tuesday 4.30pm) - Penny Smith hosts Drive on Scala Radio from 4-7pm every weekday and every Tuesday in January, she’ll be joined by a wellness expert. Looking to eat more healthily, sleep better or improve your mental wellbeing? Penny’s guests will help shed light on key lifestyle and health concerns, so you can start to feel better in 2022. Guests include Dr Radha Mogil and Johann Hari.
