The Stage reports that English National Opera are planning to produce socially-distanced stripped-back productions of shows later this year.

English National Opera Chief Executive Stuart Murphy told The Stage that reducing social-distancing to 1 metre had meant there was an opportunity to put on shows with reduced-capacity audiences.

ENO have already postponed their re-run of Hairspray until September. The organisation had also previously warned that their financial reserves could run out as early as October.

The report also illustrates how an audience distanced by 2 metres would result in 20% capacity; a 1 metre audience could result in 48% capacity. By reducing the production costs with a stripped-back production, Stuart Murphy believes it is possible to make opening for productions financially viable before social distancing is brought to an end.
