Miss Great Britain organisers have come under fire on Twitter for being 'sexist' and 'living in the dark ages' after de-crowning Zara Holland.

The 20-year-old model who was crowned Miss Great Britain in September last year was shown having sex with Alex Bowen on Wednesday's episode of Love Island.

In an official statement posted on Twitter the organisers of Miss Great Britain said “We wholly understand that everyone makes mistakes, but Zara as an ambassador for Miss Great Britain, simply did not uphold the responsibility expected of the title.”

However many angry users, including the show's presenter Caroline Flack, have responded on Twitter saying that it was a sexist decision and that it wouldn't have happened to a 'Mr GB'.

Meanwhile others have come to the defence of the pageant organiser's decision saying that this type of activity should be done privately.

This isn't the first time a Miss GB winner has been lost their title.

In 2006, Danielle Lloyd resigned after posing naked for Playboy magazine and a year later Rachael Tennent resigned handing the crown to second place Gemma Garrett.
