Dundee
Author: Vinnie Kaur Reid

Dundee shares the fine Scots tongue with the rest of the country, there are however, some words which are only used and understood by the fine residents of Dundee! This leaves the rest of Scotland and the UK firmly in the dark, with words such as Cundie, Peh and Dowp, can you think of any others?

Here are some of our favourite words than only a Dundonian will understand:

Cundie

A drain cover at the side of the road
"Aw no, I dropped my keys down the cundie"

Peh

A pie
"Gimme two pehs"

Circle

A roundabout
"Go left at the next circle"

Fehver

A five-pound note
"Lend me a fehver"

Dowp

The bottom of something or your backside
"Ahm just sitting on ma dowp"

Skiffy

A clue
"Aw geez a skiffy"

Fleg

To scare or frighten
"He can't fleg anyone"

Dinghies

Nonsense
"That's pure dinghies"

Faird

Afraid of
"I'm no faird of you"

Kribbie/Cribbie

Kerb
"Don't stand so close to the cribbie"

Pussin Aboot

Being a pest, messing around
"Those bairns keep pussin aboot"

Teckle

Great, amazing, very good
"That game was pure teckle"

So the next time you’re thinking of pussin aboot on the cribbie, don’t be surprised if you lose your keys down the cundie, and you’re left on yer dowp. And you will need at least a fehver to buy a couple of decent pehs.
