John Cummings "kicked off" at Dundee's Ninewells Hospital on May 7.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard he shouted, swore and acted aggressively towards medics there.
The court was told he had been taken to hospital heavily under the influence.
When he got there he was found wandering the wards before threatening a doctor with violence - even threatening to turn up at the home of one.
Cummings, 44, a prisoner at HMP Perth, pleaded guilty on summary complaint to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.
In a separate incident he headbutted a window - smashing it - at a bar in Dundee city centre.
Sheriff Alastair Brown jailed Cummings for eight months and said: "People who kick off in A&E, threaten staff and assault staff can expect to be dealt with very seriously.
"It is a particularly sensitive environment.
"People may have been in there suffering life threatening issues.
"Why should I should support alcohol treatment for you now when your offence was of a sort that was likely to interfere with treatment for other people?
"Deterrence in these cases is the most important sentencing objective."
