Auction of human skull and bones in Angus cancelled

Taylor's Auctioneers in Montrose removed the three lots following calls from The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland

An Angus auction house has called off the sale of a human skull, hip and thigh bones following calls The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

Taylor's Auctioneers said: "Although legal to sell & being sold by auctions throughout the UK the relevant lots have been withdrawn from the auction."

The items were set to go under the hammer in Montrose on the 5th of May.

While the sale would have been legal, The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland argued that it raised serious ethical concerns.

Director of the Society Simon Gilmour told Tay News: "We believe that it's unethical to commodify human remains in this way. The buying and selling of life humans is illegal. Why would that change once you're dead?"
