A lightning strike sparked a blaze at a house in Markinch earlier this morning.

It struck the property on George Street around half five - no one was hurt.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 5.29am on Wednesday, July 24, to reports of a fire at a property in George Street, Markinch.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire engines and a height appliance to the scene, where crews extinguished a well developed fire within the roof space of a detached two-storey property.

“There were no reported casualties

"Appliances left the scene at 9.52am."

A separate lightning strike resulted in the cancellation of trains across Perthshire due to a signalling issue.

All services between Inverness and Perth were called off but have now been restored.
