A photo of New Forest ponies appearing to be watching over the body of one of their group has been shared on social media.

Hazelhill Scrap, a nine-year-old pony, died at the side of the road after being hit by a car on 8 January.

Sarah Simmons took the picture after passing the scene of the accident near Stoney Cross.

Sarah said: "I shared the picture on social media as I thought it was actually quite poignant.

"I think it really hits home on just how upsetting it is for the commoners who own the livestock, but also for the other herd members to which these animals live with.

"This picture definitely shows the psychological effect it has on the other herd members.

"We'd really like to make people aware that when driving through the New Forest they need to drive according to the conditions, be it at night or in sunny, daylight conditions."
