This year we have already had confirmation that Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer will be reprising their roles in the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. And, just a couple of months ago we also had the first glimpse from the filming of the new movie, along with a release date, however, according to a recent statement from Paramount Pictures the film will be DELAYED!

The statement revealed that the new release date for the film would be 26th June 2020, 11 months later that originally planned, with the additional time allowing for the filmmakers to work out the flight sequences using new technology and planes. Sounds like it will be worth the wait.

Top Gun

In May, Tom Cruise excited fans with the first look of the new film. Taking to Twitter he posted a photo of his silhouette dressed as Maverick captioned, '#Day1'.

The photo shows Maverick looking towards a fighter jet, holding a helmet with his name on it. The actor also tagged film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance, the film studio behind the production.

Rumours of a Top Gun sequel started back in 2016 when Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Tom Cruise. The tweet read, 'Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.'

The rumours were then confirmed in 2017 when Tom Cruise told an Australian TV show that it would be happening. Although he wouldn't reveal exactly when they would start filming it, he said it would be "some time in the next year".

Then, earlier this year further details of the new film were released, including the name, Top Gun: Maverick and original release date (12th July 2019). Most rumours surrounding the plot say it will be in the US back in the Navy fighters weapons school, nicknamed 'Top Gun'. Maverick (played by Tom Cruise) will now have progressed through the ranks with Val Kilmer reprising his role as Commander Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.

Now take a look at the biggest films from 2017 according to Empire magazine:

20. The Lost City Of Z

2013's The Immigrant is sadly still waiting for a UK release, so praise be to the cinematic gods that James Gray's The Lost City Of Z arrived without delay. Based on the true-life tale of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), this dense but always gripping biopic is part political drama, part family drama and part adventure.
On discovering the remnants of an indigenous society, Fawcett spent his life trying to prove his Amazonian finds until his unexplained disappearance in 1925. Containing one of the most beautiful scenes of the year, this undseen gem deserves, nay, demands your attention.
