A new play area is being unveiled at murdered Alesha MacPhail's school in her memory.

An assembly will also be held Chapelside Primary later to celebrate the 6 year-old's life. The assembly will be a closed event for pupils, parents and staff.

It will also mark the completion of improvement works to the school’s play area.

More than £22,000 was raised through an online appeal towards a new wooden playhouse, which is now a main feature of the redeveloped outdoor play space.

The schoolgirl was murdered by 17 year-old Aaron Campbell on the Isle of Bute in July last year.

He was jailed for 27 years.

Mrs Wendy Davie, Head Teacher of Chapelside Primary School, said: “Alesha will never be forgotten, she is always in our thoughts. The new playground is a fitting tribute to her memory; she brought so much joy to so many people with her kindness, spirit of fun and lovely smile.

“Although the events have brought unimaginable sadness to our community, we intend the assembly to be a celebration of her life. It will focus on the happiness she brought to our school during her short life.”

Pupils have written a poem called ‘Alesha’s Smile’, which will be read out at the assembly and they will sing two of her favourite songs.

Mrs Davie added: “Everyone came together in love and support for each other during this tragic time and we will continue to support one another in the years ahead."
