Former first minister Alex Salmond is to give evidence to an independent commission charged with reviewing how the Scottish Parliament works.

Mr Salmond will appear before the next meeting of the Commission on Parliamentary Reform on Monday March 13.

Chair John McCormick has been tasked with drawing up challenging and effective recommendations for reform by Holyrood Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh.

The work is being carried out after questions were raised about how effective Parliament committees are at scrutinising Scottish Government legislation.

It also comes at a time when MSPs are preparing to take on new powers over income tax and welfare, thanks to changes introduced in the 2016 Scotland Act.

Mr Salmond's appearance follows that of former first ministers Henry McLeish and Jack McConnell.

Lord McConnell told the commission the Scottish Parliament had become too predictable and lacks spontaneity and drama, while Mr McLeish said it is ''not effectively scrutinising'' the Government and other relevant institutions.
