An Ayrshire pensioner is behind bars for the rape of a young girl.

Retired chef Malcolm Browning preyed on the child at a house in Maidens, Ayrshire.

The 73 year-old was convicted following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

He was also convicted of lewd and libidinous behaviour against the same girl and a young boy.

The offences spanned between 1979 and 1984.

Prosecutors stated the girl was as young as nine at the time with the boy aged seven when the crimes were said to have began.

Browning, now of Port Appin, Argyll, had denied the charges.

Lord Mulholland told him: "This was course over a significant period of time. You corrupted both individuals with great effect in their lives."

Browning's lawyer had asked for bail to be continued.

But, the judge remanded him in custody pending sentencing next month.
