Fire crews remain on scene at the Belleisle Hotel in Ayr after a huge fire engulfed the building.

The blaze broke out around 3.20pm on Friday 14th of June closing several roads in the surrounding area.

It continued to burn well into the evening with large sections collapsing to the ground.

The hotel has been empty for several years with its owner, John Campbell, hoping to turn it into five star accommodation.

Ayr Councillor, Siobhian Brown watched on as smoke gushed from the top of the hotel. "I am devastated looking at this wonderful, iconic building.

"Everyone I talk to is passionate, they love it. They wanted to see progress and South Ayrshire Council was actually in talks to buy back the hotel. We're all just heartbroken at what has happened.

"We don't know the full impact of it yet. They are saying it will have to be demolished because it has a health and safety issue. We will have to wait and see the damage but looking at it now, it is worse than I could ever have imagined."

South Ayrshire Council has made the decision to close the golf course and car park at Belleisle until at least the afternoon on Saturday 15th June when the situation will then be reviewed again.

Two fire crews remain on scene as an investigation into how the blaze started begins.
