A baby was catapulted through the back window of a car after it crashed and overturned in Kilmarnock.

The 11-month-old girl - who was still strapped into her car seat - suffered minor injuries after driver Teri McClung was distracted by her crying.

McClung, 26, was spared a road ban after admitting driving without due care and attention and colliding with a parked car in the town's Beansburn.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard McClung's attention wavered and she was looking in her rear-view mirror while trying to retrieve a dummy.

Mhairi Mair, prosecuting, said the shape of the Volkswagen Beetle caused it to flip after hitting the other vehicle when McClung veered to her near side.

Passers by rushed to help and the baby was taken to Crosshouse Hospital but released after a check-up and treatment for grazes.

McClung, of Danny Coffey Avenue, admitted a reduced charge of careless driving after an agreed plea after an allegation of driving dangerously was deleted.

She also admitted driving with no vehicle excise licence in the accident in November 2013.

McClung faced losing her job as a carer if she was disqualified from driving, the court heard.

Sheriff Iona McDonald fined her £375 and imposed six penalty points.
