Police have named the 9-year-old girl killed in a fatal crash in New Cumnock on Monday afternoon.

Naomi Sarah Ferrans, who was from the East Ayrshire town, was riding her bike at around 12.35pm when she was hit by a tractor towing a trailer on Castle Place.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but Naomi couldn’t be saved.

The road was closed for collision investigation work to be carried out, and re-opened around 8pm on Monday.

Inspector Craig Beaver of Ayrshires Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Naomi at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident and who hasn’t already spoken to officers to get in touch.

“I would also appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time and who may have dash-cam footage which could assist to contact us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 1311 of 18 September, 2023.

Naomi attended a local primary school in the town and East Ayrshire Council has confirmed support is being offered to anyone affected by her tragic death.

Linda McAulay Griffiths, Chief Education Officer, East Ayrshire Council said: "Our thoughts are with all involved at this very sad time. We will be working closely with the school and together we will do all we can to help and support those affected in the coming days.

"All enquiries relating to the incident itself are being handled by our colleagues in Police Scotland."

Clubs, charities and community groups in New Cumnock have cancelled events this week as a mark of respect, and New Cumnock Parish Church has also announced that its building will be open on Thursday from 11am until midday for prayer or quiet reflection.
