Former First Minister Alex Salmond has branded Donald Trump a "nincompoop" after the US President claimed Scottish independence would be "terrible."

President Trump - whose mother was born in the village of Tong on the Isle of Lewis - made the comment in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

He said: It would be terrible. They just went through hell.''

The owner of luxury golf courses in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire, Mr Trump appeared to be worried about the future of golf's Open Championship.

What would they do with the British Open if they ever got out? They'd no longer have the British Open,'' he told the newspaper
