A man’s been left seriously injured, after a chemical incident that saw a South Ayrshire distillery and a hospital locked down on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old and another man, aged 31, both went to Girvan Community Hospital after coming into contact with a liquid. They were treated for their injuries before being transferred to Ayr Hospital.

The 31-year-old man was later released but the other man remains there with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Staff who treated the pair at Girvan Community Hospital also experienced minor skin complaints, and the hospital was sealed off as a precaution.

Police say the incident was contained and there was no risk to the wider public, while NHS Ayrshire and Arran confirmed the hospital would reopen as normal on Thursday.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
