A building in Prestwick, which has been empty for some time, is being demolished next month.

The old police station and social work office on Main Street is being flattened to make way for a dozen, new affordable homes.

Work on the £1.75m project will start in March 2020 and will be completed the following year.

South Ayrshire Council bought the old station from Police Scotland to make room for the development.

Officials said failure to deliver the housing may lead to the council losing a subsidy and not being able to increase numbers of affordable homes.

Prestwick residents have voiced concerns about whether the new housing would be in the right place.

A petition was also organised to save the old jail and social work office, which are hailed as part of Prestwick’s character.

Calls have been made for the buildings to be used for other purposes instead of being knocked down.
