There is a plea for people in Ayr to get behind proposals for a new museum.

The 'Museum of Ayrshire' would be in the former Ayr Grammar Primary building, which South Ayrshire Council has put up for sale after the school relocated to the old Ayr Academy.

Dr Jimmy Begg is part of the group putting the plans together. He says, "Ayr is the only county town in the whole of Scotland that does not have a proper museum depicting the history and heritage of the town and the region.

"Having this would benefit tourism too. I think the only place suitable for wet weather activities is Pirate Petes. There is nowhere in Ayr for grandparents to take the children on a rainy day.

"We're looking for a ground swell of support. People who think the same as us that it would be a shame not to.

"This piece of silver is part of our heritage. It's been here for 150 years as an education institute and it should stay educational."

The plans also include space for community groups and a café with outdoor seating.

Further details on the building sale can be found here.
