Residents in an East Ayrshire village were evacuated from their homes last night after a massive fire broke out.

Four Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews rushed to the scene in Gatehead near Kilmarnock, after reports of a blaze in a building behind the local coach works at around 8pm.

Emergency services feared the flames could spread to a nearby stockpile of gas canisters, and the decision was made to evacuate residents from their homes.

Fire fighters managed to get the blaze under control in the early hours of this morning, and residents have since been allowed to return home.

However the building has been ruled unsafe, and needs to be demolished, meaning there's severe disruption to trains, with services between Kilmarnock and Stranraer beginning at Ayr.

Roads around the village were also closed this morning and have since reopened.

An investigation is now under way to establish how the fire was started.
