Whether you are a fan of Ayrshire, or a fan of the time-defying hit show Outlander, you will be well aware that many of its scenes have been filmed here in Scotland, with key choices being in our very own Ayrshire. Most of the locations are top tourist sites which you can visit, and envisage the cult show being played out.

Now take a look at some Outlander locations you can visit nearby:

Troon

In season one, we watched as Claire, Jamie and Murtagh boarded a ship bound for France. The coast where they boarded the ship was none other than our very own Troon.
The idyllic setting is unmistakeable as Ayrshire's top beach site for both residents and visitors. And it is no surprise really, being a fantastic stretch of sandy beach, which is open all year round with nearby free parking. The view over the Isle of Arran is lovely making it the perfect place for a wander.

Dean Castle in Kilmarnock

In season two, Ayrshire was again the location of choice for the Outlander world. This time it was the spectacular Dean Castle in Kilmarnock. Masquerading as Beaufort Castle in the Highlands, this stunning 14th century castle sets the scene for Claire and Jamie's plea to Lord Lovat to help Charles Stuart.
The castle itself is closed to visitors for restorative purposes, but the grounds are definitely worth a visit. If you would like to know more about the castle and its contents, head for the Dick Institute Museum and Gallery.

Dunure Harbour

Keen-eyed viewers may have recognised Dunure Harbour as a location not just once but twice. At a pivotal point in the story where Claire and James decided to leave Scotland in order to pursue Ian, this was filmed in Dunure Harbour.
Later in season 4, Dunure Harbour appears again as Roger and Brianna reunite in North Carolina.

Dunure Castle

In addition to the popularity of Dunure Harbour, the Outlander people were also taken with Dunure Castle which stands nearby. It appeared in season 3, under the guise of Silkie Island, confirming this area as real Outlander ground.
Take a look at the sites of these incredible scenes, filmed right here on our doorstep. The attraction of Ayrshire to the world's filming bosses is not a new fascination. The classic horror movie; The Wicker Man was filmed in none other than Culzean Castle. In fact, the producers loved the castle so much that the world premiere of the film also took place here. Considering this movie was filmed in 1973, there is no argument that the beauty and attraction of Ayrshire really can cross the boundary of time.
