Motorists are being warned a key road in Cambridgeshire will be closed for some time after a lorry caught fire in Whittlesey.

Two fire crews were called to the fire on the A605 Peterborough Road just after 7.45am (seven forty-five) this morning.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said no one was hurt.

"A crew from Dogsthorpe and one crew from Stanground were called to a lorry fire on Peterborough Road, Whittlesey," the spokesperson said.

"Crews arrived to find a mobile crane on fire in close proximity to houses.

"Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the fire."

The spokesperson said the road "is likely to be closed for some time due to a fuel spillage."

The cause of the fire was accidental.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "The A605 remains closed at the Ralph Butcher Causeway towards Whittlesey while recovery takes place."
