The Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels were taken into Mid East and Antrim Council's care.

The discovery was made after PSNI officers stopped the truck on a roadside near the port, following a tip-off from a member of the public.

The pups will be examined by a vet and will then have new homes found for them.

Another 17 dogs were rescued just before Christmas.

Mrs Patricia Allen, head of Public Protection, Health and Wellbeing at the council said: “We’ve been working closely with statutory organisations in recent months and it’s great to see that with this level of collaboration, almost 40 pups have been recovered.

“A special thanks goes to the member of the public who called in.

"Without their help we don’t know what would have happened to these dogs."
