Ulster Bank staff in Lurgan have been praised after stopping fraudsters stealing £20,000.

They alerted police when a woman came into the branch wanting to withdraw the large sum of money for home improvements.

It then emerged the victim had been conned by someone on the phone claiming to be from BT.

They told her of connection issues in her area and asked if she wanted this to be fixed.

She then received another call, saying someone was trying to funnel money through her bank account and they encouraged her to download an app which allowed them to gain access to her email and online account.

The fraudsters then convinced the woman the money in her account was not safe and by withdrawing it, she would be paid £500 by the National Crime Agency for helping them out.

The PSNI and Scamwise are urging anyone who receives a similar phonecall to contact their bank directly and never to allow remote access to a home computer.
