Police in Larne are appealing for information after a thief made off with a 102-year-old woman’s pension.

A man, believed to be in his 40s, knocked on the back door of the pensioner’s home in Newpark, a small estate close to Magheramorne House just outside Larne, last night around 5 o’clock.

He then demanded she handed over her entire pension, worth £1,000.

The thief, described as wearing a blue yacht cap and fleece, then escaped on foot.

Neighbours told Downtown & Cool FM that they believe she was deliberately targeted and that the thief waited until she was alone in the house before approaching.

One woman said: “I have lived here for about 40 years and we never had anything like this before – she lives on her home, does her own housework and does her own cooking and everything.

“It is so sad this has happened to her”.

Another neighbour added: “I am absolutely disgusted anyone could do that to an old lady.”

One man who also lives in the area branded those “picking on old people” as “scumbags.”

One person on social media described him as a 'heartless monster' while many passed their thoughts and prayers onto the elderly woman..

Police are asking anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area of the Shore road or who was has dash cam footage to get in contact.
